Showcase Features: Sustainability principles are obvious everywhere in this garden, from the permeable driveway to the urbanite patio, fruit trees, and appropriately spaced plants.

Other Garden Attractions: Many gardens look beautiful when new, but after only a few years, they look crowded and the garden owner struggles with how to keep the integrity of the design. In this newer garden, the plants are spaced appropriately. Native mallows and grasses add color and structure to the front. Coyote mint, monkeyflower, and true California goldenrod promise color, bees, and butterflies throughout the year.
Most notable, however, are the pavers (in front) and urbanite (in back, surrounding pool), which have been set with permeable concrete and will allow groundwater replenishment during the rainy season. Also in back are a young California buckeye tree, snowberry, several types of native current, and some fruit trees, rounding out a truly sustainable garden.

Gardening for Wildlife: With this very young garden, the owners aren't sure about wildlife. Yet, experience shows that since they planted the garden, the critters will come.
