Growing Natives Garden Tour 2011

Harshman Garden (10 photos)

Garden #48, San Jose

Showcase Features: This small backyard was transformed in 2009 to a colorful native plant garden that also includes edibles and herbs. The eye-catching color scheme is purple and red with yellow accents. Erigeron "Wayne Roderick" in a striking deep purple provides year-round flowers. Galvesia speciosa and Pajaro manzanita "Sunset" provide red, with San Bruno aster for cheerful yellow. A berm provides drainage for a dramatic white sage that sets off the brightly colored flowers.

Other Garden Attractions: Raised beds are used for edibles and herbs. An existing non-native bottlebrush was retained for its attractiveness to hummingbirds.

Gardening for Wildlife: Plants were chosen to provide food and nectar. Birds, butterflies and bees have responded by flocking to the garden.
