Growing Natives Garden Tour 2012

Serene Habitat Garden (5 photos)

Garden #22, Los Altos

Showcase Features: Step through the gate and find yourself transported from a small suburban street into a spacious, creek side hide-away with two majestic live oaks. The sound of water, the large trees, and the many native flowering plants invite over 80 different species of birds, lizards, and many insects, including damselflies, salamander and skinks, to this garden.

Other Garden Attractions: The front garden, planted in the 80s, features 3 mature alders underplanted with a privacy hedge of ceanothus, Oregon grape, and other native shrubs that doubles as nesting area and hiding place for many birds. The back garden, completely redesigned and replanted, includes a pervious concrete patio, attractive stone paths, and many native shrubs and perennials such as yarrow, penstemon, coast silk tassel, Bee's Bliss sage, deer grass, manzanita and more. In summer, the owners enjoy sitting under the oaks and listening to the many birds. Their song is doubly sweet after the hard labor they put in laying the stone paths and taking care of the garden.

Gardening for Wildlife: Many different songbirds nest in this garden. Swallowtail and other butterflies, different snakes, and some mammals come visiting from creek side.

Plants Available: On tour day, Native Revival Nursery will conduct a plant sale at this garden. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Going Native Garden Tour. Please pay with cash or check.
