Growing Natives Garden Tour 2015

Lily Baker Garden (5 photos)

Garden #38, San Jose

Showcase Features: The centerpiece of this garden is the low-water, low mow native lawn, Delta Bluegrass Native Bentgrass. The new lawn provides a place for kids to play and a cool place to sit. The homeowner wants to highlight the beauty and environmental benefits of native grass lawns compared to artificial turf. Visit this garden if you are considering artificial turf despite its lack of permeability and any habitat value.

Other Garden Attractions: Beds surrounding the native lawn are planted with a combination of native plants, edible plants and non-native drought-tolerant plants. Native perennials include penstemon, rosy buckwheat, Pacific iris, monkey flower and seaside daisy.

Gardening for Wildlife: The new garden includes many plants that attract pollinators, butterflies, and birds. A birdbath was also added, so many kinds of birds visit the garden. The insect-friendly plants have also attracted lizards to the garden.
